EA Play Live 2021 has come and gone and there was no mention of NHL 22. In fact, the entire showcase was light on information or updates on EA Sports’ catalog of games. But while Madden 22 and FIFA 22 each had their own pre-event livestream, there was nothing for NHL 22.
It was expected that EA could be saving NHL 22’s reveal for EA Play Live but that obviously didn’t happen. So when can we expect some sort of announcement?
It’s possible that any sort of uncertainty regarding the league’s schedule for the 2021-22 season could have impacted EA’s own timeline for NHL 22. But with league targeting a mid-October date for the start of the season, we can probably expect EA’s game to arrive around the same time.
If that’s the case, then we can look to last year’s game, NHL 21, for any sort of clue as to when we can expect an announcement. Last year, EA revealed NHL 21 on August 25, nearly two months before the game’s release.
Assuming they follow a similar schedule, then perhaps we can look forward to NHL 22’s reveal sometime next month. Again, this is pure speculation based on what was previously done.
News has started to swirl regarding NHL 22. We’ve recently seen leaks for what sounds like a planned beta that will supposedly be available on PS4 and PS5. This has led to speculation that NHL 22 could be the first game in the series to be developed as a next-gen game. While NHL 21 was playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, it was technically developed for last-gen systems.
This year, EA has made a concerted effort to differentiate between console generations. Both Madden 22 and FIFA 22 offer exclusive next-gen features found only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For Madden 22, we’re getting Dynamic Gameday, something that we believe could also apply to NHL 22. For FIFA 22, we’re getting HyperMotion, a brand new motion capture technology.
Obviously, none of this has been confirmed by EA, but it has us excited for the reveal — whenever that may be.
