This is Niche Imports. In this column, we regularly cover games that haven’t been announced for western audiences yet. Please leave feedback and let us know if there’s something you want us to cover!
We’ve learned (via Famitsu) an entirely new entry in the Gungrave series is now in development for PlayStation 4.
The new game is titled Gungrave G.O.R.E., and its being likened to a true sequel to the series, and it takes place after Grave achieved peace and rest in the events of the original story. The series’ next game, Gungrave VR, is actually a prequel leading up to the events of Gungrave G.O.R.E. and is now available in Japan.
Iggymob business director Kay Kim added that a “revival” of the series will start with Gungrave VR, leading up to Gungrave G.O.R.E., and that the overall size of development is hard to pinpoint right now. He noted that with G.O.R.E. they want to create a larger scale and level of overall quality than with Gungrave VR, so they’re using Unreal Engine.
The team is focusing on matching the scale and production level of larger games, and that the important thing is delivering a game that will have the approval and favorability of longtime fans of the series. Kim noted that they want to keep furthering their efforts and pursuit of a true follow-up in the Gungrave universe.
While Gungrave VR is now available in Japan via the PlayStation Store, a western release is set for sometime early next year. A release window for Gungrave G.O.R.E. wasn’t announced.

Never played a Gungrave, maybe I should look into them.
Check out Trigun, Yasuhiro Nightow is a genius. Definitely one of the most influential artists regarding Japanese games/media.
Awesome. Hopefully they’ll make this and the VR game available in the West.
The VR game is coming west – it’s at the bottom 😛 No word on GORE yet though
Awesome. Thanks for fixing my blindness.
Fuck Yeah, Gungrave. I love the PS2 games and Nightow is my jam, definitely one of the more stylish hack-n-slash/shooting games I’ve ever played. Can’t wait for this one.
Also Kekkai Sensen for his most recent work.
Rev up those PC petitions.
Kekkai is bad though
First Gungrave was really awesome. Short, arcade-length game but GODDAMN is it a fucking blast to play through. I couldn’t get into the second game (Overdose) due to the choppy framerate and overall lower quality, hopefully these issues are rectified in GORE.
I highly recommend watching the anime first. It’s mind-blowing how much character and soul they managed to add to such a short game.
This is the best news I’ve come across all year.
The first gungrave is on my favorite games of all time list, the second one was ok but suffered from less focused direction. That said I can’t justify buying a PS4 for this, at least until I see how it stacks up against the other 2.
