EA Sports
EA Sports’ latest hockey simulation NHL 21 is headed to EA Play this spring. In announcing some new additions to its library of games for the subscription-based service, EA confirmed that NHL 21 will arrive in April. The game will also be available for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers as Microsoft’s subscription service already includes access to the EA Play library on Xbox consoles at no additional cost.
NHL 21 released in October 2020 and is reflective of the 2020-21 NHL season. Typically the release of a new EA Sports NHL game coincides with the start of a new season, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting sports schedules, the 2020-21 season only began in January. The regular season has been reduced to just 56 games with the playoffs scheduled to run from May until July.
So yea, it’s a weird time for sports and their associated video games. But even with the weird timeline, EA Sports NHL 21 delivered an impressive game. In our review of the game, we praised it for the chances it took and the depth and enjoyment that can be had throughout the multiple game modes.
NHL 21 also released around the launch of the next-gen cycle but EA opted not to develop a next-gen version of the game. Instead, NHL 21 is forward compatible with Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
NHL 21 isn’t the only EA Sports title coming to EA Play over the next few weeks. Madden NFL 21 will also join the library in March but that one makes a little more sense as the NFL season just recently concluded and EA is probably gearing up to announced Madden NFL 22.
If anything, hockey fans are getting a little bonus here as NHL 21 is still fresh with the delayed start of the hockey season. An exact date for when NHL 21 will be added to EA Play hasn’t been announced, but it should arrive sometime in April.
