The NCAA took the first steps Tuesday toward a future in which they will permit athletes to be compensated for their names, images and likenesses, the organization’s Board of Governors said Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
“We must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes, said Michael V. Drake, the board’s chair and president of the Ohio State University, according to Axios. ”This modernization for the future is a natural extension of the numerous steps NCAA members have taken in recent years to improve support for student-athletes, including full cost of attendance and guaranteed scholarships.”
NCAA rules have long kept players from hiring agents or being paid by their schools, according to The Associated Press.
Earlier this year, a new California law — which is set to take effect in 2023 — would prevent college athletes from losing their scholarships or enrollments for signing endorsement deals.
Social media had a number of reactions to the news. But a lot of the reaction included calls for a return of the NCAA Football video game series.
EA Sports,
NCAA Football 14 was the last college football video game to hit store shelves. The NCAA ended its agreement with EA sports after large universities and conferences stepped away from the project, too.
But hopes of a revival are strong. Electronic Arts’ chief executive Andrew Wilson said at a recent Wall Street Journal technology conference that EA “would jump for the opportunity” to bring back the college football franchise.
After Tuesday’s news, social media also called for a revival.

NCAA FOOTBALL VIDEO GAME IS COMING BACK https://t.co/qWsbkB2lCI
I plan on playing with UMass, UConn or Liberty and turning them into a Dynasty on the NCAA Football game when it comes back. I'll eventually lead them into the ACC or B10 and hopefully build up the program and recruit well. That's what I liked doing in NCAA14.

Polygon, a video game news site, obtained information about a potential game called College Football 15, which would have been the follow-up to NCAA Football 14. The game would have asked gamers to create their own schools and universities as a way to avoid clashing with the NCAA.
